There's more to this beautiful space image than meets the eye

Beauty can be deadly. Most galaxies are gorgeous and compelling to look at from millions and billions of light years away. Should the future space traveler venture to close to a radiation source his hair may fall out the second day there. The point being we need to know with "certainty", which scientist say can never happen, how to get back home, where are the nearest galactic location markers to determine where you are, where are the safe places in any galaxy, how to find home if instruments fail. All this assumes your spaceship has the power to get you there in a short amount of time. On top of all that once you get near the galaxy you have to know where the planets are because galaxies are huge. Ours is 150 thousand light years across. And while there are safe zones created by the large separation between objects like stars and nebula's, as the photos point out, they are NOT clearly visible or easily avoidable. Plus radiation travels 100s of thousand miles an hour and any space ship will need extraordinary far reaching detector and sensors for early warning systems. Space is a grand challenge for future generations but all we will be able to do provide a small part of the information any traveler is going to need to wander around the the inner limits, get alone outer limits of the universe.
