A response to those with questions regarding the ability, logistics and technology for us to accomplish this... The Case For Mars by Robert Zubrin is a detailed blueprint for getting us to Mars, surviving, and colonizing it. I read this book back in the 90's, so I'm guessing it was published in '96 maybe. In the years since even Nasa's Mars plans have adopted (and scaled up) Zubrin's plans which put to bed the idea of a massive ship taking all of our supplies with us as the prevailing idea of that time. From all I've read of Mars One, it is piggybacking on the same method from sending module turned habitats ahead of time to begin production of life support necessities to the 2 year schedule of landing successive modules.... to the living off the land approach. I haven't heard Zubrin's name mentioned but the ability for us to accomplish this task was well within reach 20 years ago. Funding, politics and initiative have been the only obstacles.
